Answers, without the fluff

Frequently asked
questions.

The quick answers to the things people usually ask before, during and after setup.

Getting started

What is Command Runner?

It lets you run saved commands, read sensors and automate tasks on connected Mac, Windows and Linux hosts from the iPhone, iPad or another supported app.

What do I install?

Install the Host app on each computer you want to control, then install the iOS app on your iPhone or iPad.

Do I need an account?

No account is needed for basic local-network control. An account is needed for cloud access, account-linked Pro features and some cross-device services.

Which platforms are supported?

The Host app supports macOS 12.4 or later, 64-bit Windows 10+, and supported 64-bit Ubuntu or Debian Linux systems. The companion app runs on iPhone and iPad.

Connecting devices

Why can’t my iPhone find the Host?

Make sure both devices are on the same network, the Host app is open, and the network is not guest-isolated. You can also enter the Host address and API key manually.

Where do I get the API key?

Open Settings in the Host app, create or select an API key, then show its QR code. Keep the key private.

What does “Waiting for approval on the Host” mean?

The iOS device has reached the Host, but the Host has not trusted it yet. Approve the pending device in the Host’s trusted-device or approval controls.

Can I connect without scanning a QR code?

Yes. Enter the Host address, port and API key manually in the add-host flow.

Using Command Runner

Does the Host have to stay open?

Yes. The Host app or its background service must be running for commands and sensors to work. Enable launch at startup if you want it available automatically.

Are commands run as administrator or root?

No. Commands run with the permissions of the signed-in desktop user. Command Runner does not silently elevate itself.

Why did a command ask me to confirm?

Safety controls can require a confirmation or hold-to-run action before a command is sent. This is expected.

Can I use it away from home?

Yes, with the account-linked cloud features and an online Host. Local control alone only works when the devices can reach each other on the same network.

Can I schedule commands?

Yes. Pro includes schedules, favourites, automatic sensor refresh and cloud automation features.

Plans, privacy and fixes

What is free?

Local control and one saved host are free. Pro adds unlimited saved hosts, cloud access, schedules, automation and encrypted backup and restore.

What is the difference between the Mac releases?

The direct Mac release has fewer App Sandbox restrictions and is best for broad file, script and developer-tool access. The App Store release is managed by Apple and updates automatically.

How do I upgrade from the App Store release to direct download?

First export your commands, then remove the Host from your Cloud account before quitting and installing the direct release. Removing the Host is important: deleting the App Store app alone can leave it using one of your five Cloud host slots. Follow the full App Store upgrade guide, including what to do if you need to re-import commands or approve your iPhone again.

Is the direct Mac app safe?

It is Developer ID signed, notarised by Apple and checked by macOS Gatekeeper. It runs as your user account, not as root.

What happens if telemetry or the account service is unavailable?

Normal local app behaviour should continue. Installation telemetry is best-effort and does not control command execution.

How do I get help?

Start with the install guide, then contact support@commandrunner.app with your platform and the exact error message.
